Tech Soccer Hosts Cardinals & Bulldogs this weekend

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team returns home for the first of three straight home contests, starting with a crucial weekend of matches hosting Saginaw Valley State at 5 p.m. on Friday and Ferris State at noon on Sunday.

All home and GLIAC games will be streamed on FloSports. Michigan Tech fans can watch all home and conference games in volleyball, basketball, football and soccer with one subscription. FloSports provides each subscriber with access to all content and events with the purchase of a monthly or yearly subscription. About the Cardinals

Saginaw Valley State travels across the Mackinac Bridge with an overall record of 3-3-1 and a GLIAC ledger of 1-1-1. Most recently, the Cardinals played to a scoreless draw, hosting No. 1 Grand Valley State on Friday (Sept. 27). SVSU was outshot 16-1 and 6-0 in shots on goal but was able to grit out the draw.

Junior goalkeeper Lainey Garbarz has stood tall in goal for the Cardinals, logging 540 minutes in six games, recording 24 saves and a league-leading four shutouts. She earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors following the 0-0 draw vs No. 1 Grand Valley State, recording her 16th career shutout for SVSU.

Saginaw Valley State is producing five corner kicks and nine shots per game and have recorded four shutouts this season. Junior forward Rileigh Garbarz paces the Cardinals' offense with a team-leading seven points, netting two goals and three assists. Midfielder Madi Bajis has also netted two goals, while senior Stephanie Strong and sophomore Lauryn Fracassi have also scored game-winning goals this season.

Tyler Channel returns for his third season at the helm of the Cardinals, who were predicted to finish third in the league.

About the Bulldogs

Ferris State completed the second week of GLIAC play with a stand-alone contest against Davenport on Sunday (Sept. 29), resulting in a 1-1 draw. The Bulldogs are 3-1-3 overall, 2-0-1 in GLIAC play and a sneaky 3-0 record on the road.

The Bulldogs produce over five corner kicks, ranking third in the league, while also ranking third in assists with nine through seven games. Senior midfielder Brinley Bell is FSU's key facilitator with a team and league-leading four assists and also produces almost three shots a game. Forward Katherine Welch has added three assists to make up most of the team's total.

Junior forward Haley Buckman has a team-high three goals and six points.

Lauren Kubacki has started three games while appearing in five as the Bulldogs goalkeeper. She has amassed 14 saves in over 336 minutes in net this season. 

Greg Henson returned for his fifth season as head coach of the Bulldogs, who were tabbed to finish fourth in the GLIAC.

About the Huskies

Michigan Tech returns for a three-game home stand following a split in the opening road weekend of conference play, falling to Purdue Northwest 2-1 on Friday (Sept. 27) before erupting in a 6-0 handling of Roosevelt Sunday (Sept. 29).

The Huskies produced the highest-scoring game since the third game of the 2021 season and also earned their third shutout of the year. Julia Pietila finished with two goals and an assist, which translated into her first GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honor of her career. 

She sits atop the GLIAC with six goals in seven games, netting two game-winning goals and 13 points (six goals, one assist). Pietila is a huge piece in the Huskies, posting 13 goals this season, ranking second in the league.

Senior midfielder Kiersen Korienek also finished with four points in Sunday's win with her first goal of the season and two assists. Senior defender Molly Bolang and sophomore Ryley Winrich also recorded their first career goals over the weekend.

The Huskies are leading the league and rank 35th in the nation with 6.29 corner kicks an outing paired with 14.4 shots per game. Defensively, goalkeeper Bri Barrows is 4-2 on the year, facing 44 shots and making 18 saves with three total shutouts. Transfer Ludesha Reynolds earned the combined shutout after playing the second half of Sunday's match, recording one save.
