Huskies upended by Prairie Stars

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Adam Fenjiro picked up his first victory at No. 1 singles, but the Huskies fell 6-1 Saturday to Illinois Springfield at Springfield Racquet and Fitness Center. The Huskies combined to take just three games in doubles as the Prairie Stars seized the doubles point, then rolled to straight-set wins at singles three through six.

Michigan Tech fell to 0-2 on the weekend with seven more road matches on the calendar before returning to Houghton on April 15.

"We fought hard today, but credit to Illinois-Springfield who played us tough on their home courts," said head coach Kristin Yep. "At the end of the day, we were outplayed. We gained some insight into what we need to work on in the weeks to come."

Freshman Adam Fenjiro (Rabat, Morocco) lost just three games en route to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tomas Martinez. Vitor Jordao took the first set 6-0 but floundered 1-6, 0-6 in sets two and three at No. 2 singles against Menno Servaes. Nikolai Prosjanykov fell at No. 3 to Nick Revin 6-2, 6-2. Eli Pinnoo, Andrew Freel, and Ricardo Nunez came up short at singles spots 4-6.

Up next for the Huskies is four matches against non-conference Division II schools in California, starting with Concordia Irvine on March 7.
