Huskies Fall at Davenport Sunday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's tennis team wrapped up the weekend with a 6-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Davenport University Sunday. The Huskies kicked off their weekend road trip at Purdue Northwest University on Saturday afternoon.

Michigan Tech (2-11, 0-6 GLIAC) fell behind early when Davenport (11-7, 3-2 GLIAC) powered out of the gate with a 1-0 lead following the completion of doubles competition. Senior Mario Neto and freshman Siddhesh Mahadeshwar teamed up to battle Matthew McClurg and Jonathan Blumer in No. 1 doubles and stayed with the Panthers duo until late in the contest. Unfortunately, Neto and Mahadeshwar fell by the final tally of 6-3.

In No. 2 doubles, sophomore's Nico Caviglia and Ignacio Carbajosa dropped a tough 6-1 decision to Remy Johansen and J.L. van Antwerpen. Senior Juan Felipe Chica and freshman Nathan Sodini closed out doubles in the No. 3 spot, falling to the Parker Keas and Michael Digby 6-2 on Sunday.

Tech's point was generated in No. 6 singles Sunday afternoon with Sodini notching his team leading fourth win of the season. Sodini went three sets against Keas and gained the upper hand in the match with a 6-4 victory in set one. Keas battled back in set two with a 6-4 decision in his favor, but Sodini held him off in the third set to win the point by way of a 10-6 final score.

Neto competed for the Huskies in No. 1 singles on Sunday against Johansen and fell by the final scores of 6-2, 6-3. McClurg got by Caviglia 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 singles while Carbajosa competed against van Antwerpen in No. 3 singles. Carbajosa stayed with van Antwerpen early in each set before falling 6-2, 6-3. Bulmer defeated Mahadeshwar 6-2, 6-0 in No. 4 singles and Felipe Chica fell to Digby 6-1, 6-0 in No. 5 singles.

The Huskies return home to the Gates Tennis Center next weekend to host Ashland University and Wayne State University for a pair of GLIAC matches Friday and Saturday. The first serve each day is slated for 10:00 a.m. eastern time.
