Ferris Nips Tech 5-4 in Men's Tennis

HOUGHTON, Mich. — The Michigan Tech men's tennis team dropped its second consecutive tight decision at Gates Tennis Center today. Ferris State edged the Huskies 5-4 in a match that could have gone either way.

For the second straight day, Tech led 2-1 after doubles. Today, it was the Huskies Nos. 1 and 3 pairs getting wins. Felipe Dos Santos and Pedro Rodriguez earned an 8-6 victory at No. 1 while Built Yumuang and Nick Kremkow prevailed 8-4 at No. 3.

FSU (4-11, 3-2 GLIAC) grabbed a 4-2 lead with wins in the first three singles matches completed. Dos Santos fell to Laurent Galarneau 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1. Rodriguez and Yumuang both lost first-set tiebreakers en route to straight set losses at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively.

Javier Oliveros gave the Black and Gold a chance at the team win with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 triumph at No. 2 singles.

Kremkow was two points from a crucial break in the second set of his No. 5 singles match but couldn't get it. He fell 6-2, 6-4, and the Bulldogs earned the team victory.

Jimmy Konarske rounded out the match with a 7-6 (10), 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.

"We feel like this is one we should have had," said Tech coach Kevin Kalinec. "Our doubles was good, but we've got to figure out a way to carry it over into singles."

Michigan Tech, which now owns an 8-4 overall record and 3-2 GLIAC mark, will continue conference play next weekend at Wayne State and Northwood. Matches are Saturday (Mar. 29) at 1 p.m. in Detroit and Sunday at 10 a.m. in Midland.
