Men's Tennis Clipped at Grand Valley, Ferris

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — The Michigan Tech men's tennis team dropped two matches on the road over the weekend. The Huskies were clipped 5-4 at Grand Valley State on Saturday (Mar. 23) and lost 8-1 at Ferris State on Sunday (Mar. 24).

In the match against GVSU, doubles proved to be the difference. The host Lakers grabbed a 2-1 lead by claiming two doubles points. GVSU won 8-3 at No. 2 while Tech won 8-6 at No. 3. The top doubles flight was decided in a tiebreaker as GV's Francis Bertrand and Bryan Hodges defeated Pedro Rodriguez and Felipe dos Santos 9-8 (4). The teams split the six singles flights. Rodriguez and Jimmy Konarske were straight set winners for the Huskies at Nos. 4 and 6, respective. Built Yumuang was Tech's other singles winner. He was leading in his third-set super tiebreaker 6-0, 6-7 (4), 7-5 when his opponent was disqualified for misconduct.

Sunday, Tech battled Ferris in several close matches but could only muster a lone point. Yumuang was the Huskies' winner as he made it 2-0 in three-set affairs on the weekend with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 victory at No. 3 singles. Rodriguez was two points away from a win at No. 4 singles before losing 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-8. Konarske nearly pushed his No. 6 singles match to a third set but fell 6-4, 7-6 (6).

"I'm proud of how the guys played," said head coach Kevin Kalinec. "We held our composure at Grand Valley, but just needed that extra doubles win. Ferris State is a really strong team."

Michigan Tech is now 12-6 overall and 3-3 in GLIAC play. The Huskies will host Wayne State on Saturday (Mar. 30) at 10 a.m.
