HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Michigan Tech women's tennis team won three of its four matches in South Carolina during spring break over the last week. The Huskies earned wins over Limestone, Chowan and St. Joseph's and lost to Florida Tech.
Tech opened with No. 16-ranked Florida Tech on Saturday (Mar. 9) and dropped a 7-2 decision. The Huskies earned wins a No. 3 doubles (where Kira Eck and Chelsea Uganski won 8-4) and No. 2 singles (where Kwang Suthijindawong cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 score). FTU won all other flights by straight sets.
The Huskies bounced back with a 5-4 triumph over Limestone on Tuesday (Mar. 12). Doubles proved to be the difference in the match as Tech claimed two of the three points before the teams split the six singles flights. Natalia Lebedeva and Dujna Imran Al-Sous paired for an 8-5 score at No. 1 doubles. Suthijindawong and Emilia Tenizbaeva were also winners 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Singles matches were contested using pro sets as well. Lebedeva and Suthijindawong were both 8-2 winners at Nos. 1 and 2 respectively. Tenizbaeva secured the decisive point at No. 4 singles 8-5.
Tech defeated Chowan on Wednesday (Mar. 13) with an 8-1 score. The Huskies swept the doubles flights and won five of the six singles matches. Lebedeva earned a No. 1 singles victory 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 10-4 in the closest match of the week. The rest of the singles flights were decided in straight sets. Chowan claimed its lone point at No. 3 singles.
The Black and Gold closed out their spring trip with a 9-0 sweep of St. Joseph's (Ind.) on Thursday (Mar. 14). All six singles matches were decided in two sets. Eck and Uganski both finished their collegiate careers with decisive wins. Eck triumphed 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 while Uganski earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
The Michigan Tech women's tennis team wrapped up its 2012-13 schedule with an 11-12 overall record. The Huskies finished their spring schedule with a 4-2 record.
