HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team earned a weekend sweep of its opponents at Gates Tennis Center. The Huskies defeated Roosevelt 4-3 on Friday and upended Purdue Northwest 6-1 on Saturday.
The Black and Gold started the weekend with doubles wins at No. 1 when
Caoimhe McDonnell and
Alexandra Nikonenko dominated 6-0 and
Chiara Heinz and
Emily Rose won 6-2. In the singles, No. 4
Emily Rose won 6-4, 6-4 for a perfect day, while
Chiara Heinz also went unbeaten with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5.
Caoimhe McDonnell took the second set in her match in the No. 2 position but fell 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
The weekend wrapped up against the Pride on Saturday. No. 1 doubles pair of
Caoimhe McDonnell and
Alexandra Nikonenko won 6-2 to kick things off for the Huskies. The duo then opened their singles matches with wins.
Alexandra Nikonenko edged her opponent 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1, and
Caoimhe McDonnell won 7-6, 6-3 in the No. 2 slot.
Anamarija Ukic won in three in the No. 3 position, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Chiara Heinz took her second singles win of the weekend 6-1, 6-2.
Tech is 4-4 overall on the season and 2-1 in the GLIAC and remains at home this weekend, hosting Ferris State on Friday and Wayne State on Saturday at Gates Tennis Center.
