HOUGHTON, Mich. - Sophomore Katie Boardman scored twice and assisted on the third
goal to lead the Michigan Tech soccer team to a 3-2 home victory
over Bemidji State Saturday (Sept. 3). With the win, the Huskies
remain a perfect 3-0 against non-conference opponents in school
history.
Boardman wasted no time scoring her first goal of the season two
minutes into the game. The Fond du Lac, Wis., native shot a low
ball into the corner of the goal directly off a free kick at the
top of the penalty box.
The Huskies took a 2-0 advantage after sophomore defender Sarah Hielsberg sent a through ball to Boardman who
snuck the ball by the Bemidji State goalie who came out on the play
for her second goal in the 39th minute.
Boardman tallied her school-record fifth point of the match with an
assist on freshman McKenzie Hengesh's first career goal. Boardman sent a
pass across the goal to Hengesh who scored high over Bemidji State
goalie Abby Kjonaas with just over one minute remaining in the
half.
"I was really happy with the way we started the game," said head
coach Michelle Jacob. "We started strong, moved the ball
well and moved it forward when we had the opportunity."
The Beavers did not go away quietly however, scoring a pair of
goals in the second half.
Forward Kirsten Erickson scored the first goal for BSU with a
beautiful shot in the upper corner in the 59th minute.
The Beavers almost scored their second goal of the game in the
exact same fashion less than a minute later but the shot narrowly
missed the goal.
Freshman Annie Glissendorf tallied her second assist of the match
after sending a low pass across the face of the goal to senior
Bethany Fluto who tapped in the ball for the Beaver's second goal
in the 87 minute.
Tech finished with a decisive 21-7 advantage in shots.
Sophomore MaryBeth Spoehr earned the win for the Huskies making
one save and allowing one goal in 76 minutes of work. Freshman Jacqui Landry allowed one goal in 16 minutes of
relief work.
Kjonaas allowed three goals and made nine saves in the loss.
Tech will face Minnesota, Crookston Sunday (Sept. 4) at Sherman
Field.
