HOUGHTON, Mich. - Sophomore Kayla Johnston scored two goals,
including the game-winner, to lift Saginaw Valley State to a 3-2
soccer victory over Michigan Tech Sunday (Sept. 26). The Huskies
(3-5-0, 1-5-0 GLIAC) finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots over
the Cardinals (4-3-1, 3-2-1 GLIAC).
"We battled hard and did the right things so it is a tough loss to
take," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "We played like we wanted it
today and we continue to improve all over the field."
Freshman Ari Peterson gave the Huskies the early lead in the 22nd
minute after scoring an unassisted goal from 30 yards out.
Freshman Emily Wheat tied the game at 1-1 off a shot from inside
the penalty box ten minutes later.
Johnston gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead after sending a header off
the hands of Tech goalie MaryBeth Spoehr.
Freshman Katie Boardman scored her second goal of the season 15
minutes into the second half. Freshman Melanie Hoffman sent a cross
into the box that Boardman volleyed past SVSU goalie Laura Van de
Valk.
Johnston scored the game-winner with a shot off a pass into the box
by freshman Shelby Wright with less than 15 minutes remaining.
SVSU held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
Spoehr finished with three saves for Tech and Van de Valk made two
saves for Saginaw.
Tech will play its first ever road match Friday (Oct. 1) at
Ashland.
