HOUGHTON, Mich. The Michigan Tech men's tennis team was
defeated 9-0 by Grand Valley State at Gates Tennis Center today.
The Huskies record fell to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
"We did not come up with good energy today, and you can't play that
way against a quality team," said head coach Mike Axford. "This was
very disappointing because this was a team we expected to compete
with."
The final team score was not indicative of the level of competition
in the match. All three doubles were tightly contested, with Tech's
No. 3 duo of Tim Viola and Chris Verhulst posting the closest score
at 8-6.
In singles, GVSU's Tony Dang bested Brett Girard 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1.
Tech's Brandon Ellefson nearly forced a third set at No. 4 before
falling 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Michigan Tech will resume play with a Friday (April 3) match at
Tiffin.
