HOUGHTON, Mich. The Michigan Tech men's tennis team
opened its 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
season today a 9-0 loss to No. 20-ranked Northwood. The Huskies
record now stands at 4-5 overall and 0-1 in league play. The
Timberwolves improved to 6-1 and 1-0 in the league.
Northwood won all the matches in straight sets. Tech's No. 1
doubles duo of Brett Girard and Douglas Yossida posted the best
score at 8-4.
In singles, Tim Viola played his first match at No. 4 singles and
lost 6-3, 6-3. Girard fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1.
"We started out doubles very solidly, but Northwood was able to
come up with one more good shot," said head coach Mike Axford. "It
was similar in singles. The game scores were close, but they won
the big points to come out on top.
"This was a good match to get us prepared for Wayne State
tomorrow."
Tech will play host to GLIAC foe Wayne State tomorrow in the second
of five home league matches for the Huskies this spring. Opening
serve at Gates Tennis Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
