DETROIT The Michigan Tech men's tennis team lost to Wayne
State in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener
today. The host Warriors posted an 8-1 decision.
Number six singles player Matt Tronnes turned in the Huskies' lone
win of the day. He bested Marion Leone by a 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) score.
All the other singles matches were straight set wins for Wayne
State. Tech's Brett Girard fell, 6-3, 6-2 at number one singles.
Justin Foley's number five singles match took the same number of
games (6-2, 6-3).
All three doubles matches were close. Girard and Tronnes were
edged, 9-8 (3), at number one doubles. Both the number two and
three doubles scores were 8-5.
"We started okay in doubles and kept all three matches close," said
head coach Mike Axford. "We had patches where we didn't play well,
and that cost us. Our inconsistency is a problem that we'll try to
improve on as we continue down the road."
Michigan Tech (2-10) will remain on the road and face Northwood
tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Midland, Mich.
