Michigan Tech is recipient of NCAA Presidents' Award for sixth straight year

Tech is one of two GLIAC institutions to earn the honor.

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech is a recipient of the NCAA Presidents' Award for Academic Excellence, presented to member schools earning an Academic Success Rate of 90 percent or higher. It's the sixth straight year the Huskies have been honored.

The Huskies have a four-year Academic Success Rate of 92 percent across Division II programs. Michigan Tech was one of only two GLIAC universities to receive the award as 43 Division II institutions were recognized with the honor.

"Academic achievement remains a cornerstone of Michigan Tech Athletics," said Suzanne Sanregret, Michigan Tech Vice President for Athletics and Recreation. "Reaching a 92 percent Academic Success Rate highlights the dedication of our student-athletes, the emphasis our coaches place on balancing academics with competition, and the comprehensive support our department provides. Given Michigan Tech's rigorous academic environment and the demands of travel and time away from class, this milestone is truly impressive. We are grateful to our faculty and advisors for continually guiding our student-athletes as they strive for excellence both in their studies and in their sport."

The ASR is based on student-athletes who entered Michigan Tech from 2015-18. Men's Nordic skiing, women's basketball, volleyball, and women's and men's tennis achieved a perfect 100 percent ASR. Men's and women's cross country and track and field, soccer, all had over 90 percent with every program earning an ASR that ranks higher than the national average.

"The Presidents' Award for Academic Excellence highlights what makes Division II truly distinctive — our unwavering commitment to the full success of our student-athletes," said Colleen Perry Keith, president at Goldey-Beacom College and president of the Division II Executive Board. "Achieving a 90 percent Academic Success Rate is an extraordinary accomplishment, and these 43 institutions exemplify the balance of academic achievement, competitive excellence and personal growth that defines Division II. I am especially proud of the sustained dedication shown by the schools that have earned this honor year after year. Their consistency reflects a deep, campus wide commitment to ensuring that student-athletes are supported, challenged and prepared for life well beyond graduation."

The Division II ASR includes transfers into a school in the calculation and removes those who transferred out of the school while academically eligible. The ASR also includes over 30,000 nonscholarship student-athletes in the division who were enrolled in the four years covered in the most recent data.

Even when using the less-inclusive federal graduation rate, student-athletes are outperforming their peers in the general student population by five percentage points. For Division II student-athletes, the federal rate is 58 percent, while the general student body federal rate is 53 percent.
