HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's basketball squad looks to defend its undefeated home record this weekend, welcoming Saginaw Valley State on Thursday (7:30 p.m.) and Wayne State Saturday (2 p.m.).Â

About the Cardinals
Saginaw Valley State enters the week 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC. In 2025, the Cardinals are 1-3 in league play with losses to then-No. 4 Ferris State (83-72), then-No. 14 Lake Superior State (73-44) and most recently dropped a home game to Parkside (77-66) on Saturday. SVSU's lone conference win came on Thursday against Purdue Northwest (81-68).
The Cardinals have a 5-3 record at home but have difficulty on the road with a 1-4 record away from the O'Neill Arena.
SVSU produced 74.5 points per game with the second-most 3-point attempts in the league (27.9), ranking eighth in the GLIAC in 3-point percentage (31.8). Freddie McIntosh is the team's best 3-point shooter, cashing in 2.93 triples a game at a clip of 38.3 percent. McIntosh is the team's second-best scoring with 14.2 points per game, just behind Toodles Seal, the top-scorer at 14.9 points per outing.Â
Elijah Mattingly (10.3) and Maurice Anderson (9.6) also bring vital points for the Cardinals. Mattingly leads the way with 6.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks for SVSU.Â
Randy Baruth enters his 13th season leading the Cardinals, who were predicted to finish eighth in the GLIAC.
About the Warriors
Wayne State travels north with an overall record of 7-7 while playing to a 3-3 ledger in the GLIAC. The Warriors are coming off its first conference weekend sweep with two close wins at home, besting Parkside (65-61) on Thursday and a 70-67 victory over Purdue Northwest on Saturday.
Wayne State has a 6-2 record at home but has struggled on the road with a 1-5 record away from the Wayne State Fieldhouse, including a 0-2 road record in league play.Â
Carmelo Harris leads a trio of Warriors in double-figure scoring with 15.9 points per game, making 2.4 3-points an outing and 3.4 free throws. He ranks first in the GLIAC and second in the country, shooting 94 percent from the charity stripe, with 47 makes on the season.Â
Rob Lee, Jr. (13.3) and Tamario Adley (12.8) join Harris in double-figure scoring, with Adley leading the Warriors in assists (3.8) and steals (1.7) per game. Lee, Jr. is also a vital facilitator for WSU, adding 3.3 assists per game.
Wayne State was tabbed to finish fifth in the GLIAC under head coach Bryan Smothers in his third year at the helm.
About the Huskies
Michigan Tech is 5-0 at home this season and most recently completed its second GLIAC weekend sweep of the season, handling Northern Michigan (88-65) on the road Thursday before dismantling first-year GLIAC affiliate Roosevelt (82-59) for an overall record of 10-4 and a 5-1 ledger in the loop.
The 5-1 GLIAC start is the best since the 21-22 season and the Huskies are winning games by an average margin of 17.3 points while shooting 51.2 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from 3-point land with 12.2 3-point makes a game.
Michigan Tech's 50.7 percent field goal percentage for the year ranks ninth in the nation and first in the league, backed by GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year, Marcus Tomashek, who leads the team with 23 points an outing and was recently named to the Bevo Francis Top-100 Watch List.
First-year guard Ty Fernholz has been electric off the bench for the Black & Gold, adding 12.8 points on 50.6 percent from 3-point range, knocking down 39 triples this season. His 3-point percentage ranks fourth in the nation and he was awarded his first GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honor this season following his performance over the weekend.
Senior Pete Calcaterra joins the aforementioned duo in double-figure scoring with 10.8 points and a team-leading 5.5 rebounds for the Black & Gold. Calcaterra scored a career-high 24 points in Saturday's win over Roosevelt.Â
Forward Dawson Nordgaard has scored in double-figures in 10 games this season and averages 9.8 points and 3.8 rebounds while adding a steal and a block per outing.
One Last ThingÂ
Senior guard Adam Hobson chips in 6.4 points per game off the bench and is 11 points away from joining the 1,000-point club, with the Huskies already seeing one player reach 1,000 career points with Tomashek hitting the milestone in the season opener on Nov. 8.
