Michigan Tech is recipient of NCAA Presidents' Award in fifth straight year

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech is a recipient of the NCAA Presidents' Award for Academic Excellence, presented to member schools earning an Academic Success Rate of 90 percent or higher. It's the fifth straight year the Huskies have been honored.

The Huskies have a four-year Academic Success Rate of 92 percent across Division II programs. Michigan Tech was the only GLIAC institution to receive the award as 44 Division II institutions were recognized with the honor.

"The academic success of our student-athletes is extremely important to Michigan Tech Athletics," said VP for Athletics and Recreation Suzanne Sanregret. "A 92 percent Academic Success Rate is a testament to the quality of the student-athletes that we recruit, the commitment from the coaches to focus on academics as well as athletics, and the holistic approach that we take as a department to support them. Also, considering the academic rigor of Michigan Tech and the challenges associated with travel and missed class time this is an exceptional accomplishment. I'd like to thank the Michigan Tech faculty and advisors for their support of our student-athletes as they pursue their goals in the classroom and in their sport."

The ASR is based on student-athletes who entered Michigan Tech from 2014-17. Men's and women's Nordic skiing, women's basketball, volleyball, and women's and men's tennis achieved a perfect 100 percent ASR. Men's and women's cross country and track and field, soccer, and football all had over 90 percent with every program earning an ASR that ranks higher than the national average.

Football achieved a 92 percent ASR, fourth in the nation across all Division II football programs.

It takes a village to support student-athletes and create the balanced environment for them to thrive academically and athletically," said Jason Jones, associate athletics director for compliance at Catawba and chair of the Division II Academic Requirements Committee. "This prestigious honor recognizes 44 schools that have achieved academic excellence, and I'm thrilled to congratulate them."

The Division II ASR includes transfers into a school in the calculation and removes those who transferred out of the school while academically eligible. The ASR also includes over 30,000 nonscholarship student-athletes who were enrolled in the four years covered in the most recent data.

Even when using the less-inclusive federal graduation rate, student-athletes are outperforming their peers in the general student population by 7 percent. For Division II student-athletes, the federal rate is 60 percent, while the general student body federal rate is 53 percent.
