HAMMOND, Ind. - For the second straight day, victory or defeat came down to the final match of the afternoon and for the second straight day, Lauren Opalewski delivered at No. 6 singles, propelling Michigan Tech to its third straight GLIAC win 4-3 over Purdue Northwest Saturday at Park Forest Tennis Club.
Similar to Friday's 4-3 victory over Davenport, the Huskies had to come from behind after dropping the team doubles point to win on the road. Senior Dominika Bobik (Wroclaw, Poland) continued her strong stretch at No. 1, defeating Sienna Lopez 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Bobik (2022 All-GLIAC honorable mention) is 6-3 in the top lineup position this spring.
Grace Eland followed with a straight set win over Aarni Reddy Yellu 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2. The Pride pushed back with victories at No. 3 and No. 4, leaving a 3-3 match score for Opalewski, who prevailed over Salma Raslan 6-3, 6-2.
"The girls were really tough today and pushed through all adversity they encountered," said head coach Kristin D'Agostini-Yep. "I was really happy we came out on top against a challenging opponent."
The Huskies (6-4, 3-0 GLIAC) are the first team to three conference victories and have four regular season matches left to play, starting Friday, March 31 at Saginaw Valley State at 10 a.m. MTU closes the spring with three straight home matches. All are against ITA Top-50 ranked opponents.
Purdue Northwest (7-7, 2-1) plays at Ferris State on March 31.
