Bulldogs edge Huskies in Big Rapids 4-3

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Michigan Tech women's tennis made a valiant comeback in singles, but the team doubles point went to Ferris State, enabling the Bulldogs to slide past the Huskies 4-3 in women's tennis at Ferris State Racquet and Fitness Club Friday afternoon. The Huskies fell to 0-5, 0-1 GLIAC and continue on the road with No. 49 Grand Valley State University Saturday at 9 a.m.

"Blood, sweat, and tears were left out there today," said head coach Kristen Yep. "It came down to the doubles. We didn't quite hit the mark there and losing that point was a major factor. There were up and down moments in singles and I felt we fought so hard from beginning the end."

The Huskies made a promising start at No. 3 doubles. Ivona Gorgioski and Marina Fernandez teamed to defeat Patricia Martin-Gomez and BrittanyLevenant 6-3 but the Bulldogs dropped four combined games at positions one and two heading into singles competition.

At No. 3 singles, Gorgioski was the first to finish and downed Agata Klak 6-3, 6-4 to even the score. Levenant defeated Dominika Bobik 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2, and Parker Nolan won a second straight tiebreak over Lauren Opalewski at No. 4 singles 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Neva Manas found success at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Martin-Gomez. Nicole Ballach's undefeated singles start this season ended in three sets at the No. 1 position to Sophie Daavettila 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Marina Fernandez got the Huskies their third point with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory at No. 6 singles over Kennedy Dumas.

Ferris State (6-5, 1-1 GLIAC) bounced back after a 5-2 loss to Grand Valley State last week. The Bulldogs host Lake Superior State next. The Huskies have lost two of their first five matches by a 4-3 margin. Tech does not play in Houghton for the first time until Friday, April 1.
