Huskies Sweep Purdue Northwest Sunday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team capped a solid weekend with a 9-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win on Senior Day against Purdue Northwest Sunday at Gates Tennis Center. The Huskies topped Davenport on Saturday 9-0 and with Sunday's win the team has now won three straight contests. Seniors Sandra Cvetabovic and Natalia Parra Alvarez were honored prior to Sunday's match.

Michigan Tech (6-5, 4-5 GLIAC) set the tone for the day in doubles with a pair of 8-0 scores and a close 9-7 decision that went Tech's way as well. Sandra Cvetanovic and Natalia Parra Alvarez teamed up for an 8-0 win over Cynthia Basu-Chavez and Carolina Yepez in No.2 doubles while Allenca Rolim and Anabella Neri posted an identical 8-0 victory in No. 3 doubles.

Ivona Gorgioski and Vicky Quinde were paired up in No.1 doubles and held on for the 9-7 decision. It proved to be a back and forth contest with the Purdue Northwest (5-7, 07 GLIAC) duo Brooke Foltz and Lena Van Bergen who stayed within striking distance throughout the contest.

The Huskies carried their 3-0 lead into singles competition and continued to play well. Paola Quintana moved up to No. 1 singles on Sunday and edged Van Bergen 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 for one of the six points. Cvetanovic claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win against Foltz in the No. 2 spot in the lineup and Quinde edged Carolina Yepez 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.

Neri had a solid 6-0, 6-1 victory in four singles over Cynthia Basu-Chavez, Alvarez triumphed 6-0, 6-1 in five singles against Anna Wachowski, and Rollim picked up the point in six singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win against her opponent Abby Kvachkoff.

The Huskies will close the fall portion of the regular season schedule on Saturday at Lake Superior State University beginning at 10:00 AM. Tech is currently seventh in the GLIAC standings, but only a half game out of fifth place going into the final GLIAC match of the season.
