Soccer Edged by Winona State 2-1 in Opener

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Winona State defeated Michigan Tech 2-1 in non-conference women's soccer today at Sherman Field. The Huskies scored in the 66th minute to tie the game at 1, but the Warriors answered four minutes later to earn the win in both teams season opener.

WSU got on the board in the 12th minute as a shot into the box was knocked down to the feet of Nicole Sames, who scored. Tech created a couple good chances later in the half including Lexi Herrewig's drive that clanged off the cross bar in the 20th minute.

Tech finally knotted the game in the 66th minute off a free kick. Janelle Riedl lifted a pass to the top of the six-yard box where Jenna Proctor headed it past the Warriors goalkeeper.

It took just four minutes for the visitors regain the lead, however. Mehan Bolton powered a long, low shot into the net. Huskies keeper Jenna Phelps got a piece of it, but not enough.

Michigan Tech could not come up with a second equalizer.

"We played a good game," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "I thought we created enough chances, but Winona's a really strong team. All the credit goes to them.

"We scheduled some tough teams in our early schedule, and it's a good way to open our season."

Tech, which opens the year with a four-match home stretch, will host St. Cloud State Sunday (Sept. 7) at noon.
