Box Score HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech began its fourth season of intercollegiate women's soccer with a goal in the fourth minute en route to a 2-0 triumph over Minnesota-Crookston tonight at Sherman Field.
Lindsey Van Rooy chipped a ball inside the right post for the Huskies' first goal of 2013 and the 15th of her career. The senior had two more good chances in the half that were steered aside by Golden Eagles' goalkeeper Lexie Gauger.
Tech posted a 14-1 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes.
The visitors were able to generate slightly more ball possession in the second half, but the Huskies still maintained control. The Black and Gold struck with their second goal in the 72nd minute. Annie Dahlquist headed home a Katie Boardman corner kick for a 2-0 lead.
MaryBeth Spoehr started the game in net for Tech and was replaced by Jenna Phelps at half. Phelps saved all three UMC shots on goal in the contest.
Final shot totals were 23-6 in favor of the Huskies.
"I was really pleased with how we started tonight," said Tech head coach Michelle Jacob. "We asked the ladies to set a tone from the get-go, and that's what they did. We had some brilliant moments, but we have some things to work on too. Overall, it's a good start."
Michigan Tech will play again on Saturday (Sept. 7), when it travels to Wisconsin-Parkside. The non-conference match is slated to start at 1 p.m. ET.
