ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The Michigan Tech men's tennis team moved its record to 9-1 with a split of two matches in Illinois this weekend. The Huskies were defeated for the first time this season by No. 33-ranked Lewis 6-3 last night before beating Olivet Nazarene 5-3 today.
In the Lewis match, the Huskies fell behind 3-0 after doubles and never recovered. The Flyers, ranked fourth in the region, won 8-1, 8-2 and 8-5 at Nos. 1-3 doubles, respectively.
The teams went on to split the six singles flights. LU posted straight set wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Matches at Nos. 3 and 4 both went to super tiebreakers. Florian Etienne defeated Tech's Built Yumuang 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 at No. 3. The Huskies' Pedro Rodriguez won at No. 4 by a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 score.
Nick Kremkow and Jimmy Konarske rounded out the day with wins at Nos. 5 and 6.
Tech returned to action roughly 12 hours later vs. Olivet Nazarene and earned the 5-3 triumph. The Huskies fared much better in doubles in the second match of the weekend, winning two of the three flights. Javier Oliveros and Yumuang earned a 9-7 victory at No. 2 while Konarske and Andrew Kremkow were 8-3 winners at No. 3.
After Rodriguez earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles, ONU posted wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to pull tied at 3-all in the team score.
Nick Krewmkow gained a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 5 singles and Yumuang was in a third-set super tiebreaker at No. 3 for the decisive team point. He eventually claimed a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 decision to complete the victory. Konarske was leading 6-4, 3-1 at No. 6 but did not finish once the team match was decided.
Two Michigan Tech singles players are still undefeated on the season. Rodriguez and Nick Kremkow are both 10-0.
Michigan Tech will return to action Saturday (Mar. 2) when it hosts perennial GLIAC power Northwood.
