ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The Michigan Tech women's tennis team returned to action with its first matches since last October with two outings in Illinois this weekend. The Huskies lost to host Lewis 6-3 yesterday before coming back with an 8-1 victory over Olivet Nazarene today.
In the match against Lewis, which is ranked No. 3 in the region, Tech won one of the three doubles flights and two of the six singles matches. Natalia Lebedeva and Kwang Suthijindawong, who were a combined 29-2 during the fall season, were both defeated. Lebedeva lost 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1. Suthijindawong, a freshman, suffered her first singles loss by a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 decision.
Emilia Tenizbaeva and Dunja Imran Al-Sous were Tech's singles winners at Nos. 4 and 6 respectively. The Huskies' doubles point came from Suthijindawong and Kira Eck at No. 2 by a 9-8 score.
Michigan Tech bounced back with the convincing win over Olivet Nazarene. The Huskies swept the doubles and took five of the six singles flights. Lebedeva and Suthijindawong both earned victories in singles as did Tenizbaeva, Imran Al-Sous and Chelsea Uganski. Uganski's came via a third-set super tiebreaker 1-6, 6-2, 10-3.
Tech, which is now 8-11 in 2012-13, will be off until it travels to Hilton Head, S.C., Mar. 9-14 for spring break.
