HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Michigan Tech men's tennis team
continued play during its spring break trip with an 8-1 loss to
Brevard. The Huskies are 1-3 on the trip with a win against St.
Joseph's and losses to Newberry, Palm Beach Atlantic and
Brevard.
On Monday (Mar. 5), Tech resumed a match against Newberry (S.C.)
that it had started Saturday. The Huskies ended up falling 6-3 to
the Wolves. Doug Yossida and Andrew Kremkow were winners at No. 3
and 5 singles, respectively. Tech's other point came from No. 3
doubles where Bryan Bartelt and James Konarske earned an 8-6
victory. The match was concluded on clay courts, marking the first
time this season the team had played on the surface.
Later in the day, Michigan Tech earned its first win of the trip
with a 7-2 decision over St. Joseph's (Ind.). The Huskies swept the
top five singles flights and top two doubles flights to gain a
victory vs. an in-region opponent. Anders Sandholm and Luka Stupar
both cruised in their singles matches. Sandholm won 6-2, 6-1 at No.
1 while Stupar put up an identical score at No. 2.
After a day off Tuesday (Mar. 6), the Black and Gold resumed
play today. They were overpowered by Brevard (N.C.), 8-1. Tech
played without the services of No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles
player Yossida, who will miss the rest of the trip's matches with
injury. The Huskies' No. 2 doubles duo of Andrew Kremkow and James
Konarske secured the team's only point. The top two singles flights
both went to third sets, but Brevard prevailed in both.
Michigan Tech will wrap up its play at Hilton Head tomorrow
(Mar. 8) with an 8:30 a.m. match against Ashford.
