DePERE, Wis. - The Michigan Tech men's tennis team opened its
2012 campaign by winning two of its three matches last weekend. The
Huskies defeated St. Norbert's and Carthage and lost to UW-Green
Bay.
The Black and Gold opened with a tough 9-0 setback to the NCAA
Division I UWGB Phoenix on Friday (Feb. 3). No. 1 singles player Anders
Sandholm put up a tough battle before falling 6-2, 6-4 to
UWGB's Erik Finkenbrink. Sandholm and doubles partner Andrew
Kremkow had the tightest doubles score with an 8-4 decision at
No. 2.
The squad bounced back in a big way Saturday, upending host St.
Norbert 9-0 in a morning match. Tech swept both doubles and singles
despite some very close matches. Bryan

Konarske paired up at No. 3 doubles to win a tiebreaker 9-8 in
their match. In singles, the Huskies claimed five of the six
flights by straight sets. The three-set match belonged to Konarske
who earned a 5-7, 7-5, 10-3 come-from-behind victory.
Tech found itself mired in a much closer match in the afternoon,
and prevailed 6-3 over Carthage. All three doubles flights were
close, with Tech winning two of the three to grab the early lead.
The Huskies then took each of the top four flights in singles to
grab the win. Sandholm was a 6-4, 6-1 victor at No. 1 singles. Luka
Stupar claimed a 6-3, 7-5 triumph at No. 2. Doug
Yossida eked by in his No. 3 match by a 5-7, 7-5, 10-8 score.
Konarske rounded out the Huskies' scoring with a 6-1, 6-2 decision
at No. 4.
Michigan Tech will return to action on Feb. 18 with a home match
against Lewis.
