Women's Tennis Slides Past Hillsdale 5-4

HILLSDALE, Mich. - Michigan Tech eked out a 5-4 win at Hillsdale in GLIAC women's tennis today. Senior Ploy Suthijindawong secured the deciding point for the Huskies, who improved to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in league play with the victory.

Tech trailed 2-1 after doubles. Suthijindawong and Chelsea Uganski provided the Huskies' doubles win at No. 2 with an 8-0 score. HC won at No. 1 by an 8-5 score and at No. 3 by forfeit.

The Chargers moved to four points in the team match with wins at Nos. 1 and 6 singles. Brittany Parks edged Tech's Natalia Lebedeva 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-6 in a third-set supertiebreaker.

Michigan Tech put together straight set wins at Nos. 2-5 for the team win. Kira Eck cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3. Uganski earned a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 4. Jacqueline Kukulski scored her first win of 2011 with a 6-3, 6-1 count at No. 5.

Suthijindawong's deciding match was briefly in doubt. She won the first set 6-0, but was down 3-0 in the second before rallying to close out the frame 6-4.

"It was great to see Ploy battle back in her match," said first-year head coach Kevin Kalinec. "We got very good performances at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles."

Michigan Tech will play the second of its three-match road trip tomorrow at Grand Valley State at 10 a.m.
