HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech shook off a slow start to defeat
Lake Superior State 7-2 in GLIAC men's tennis today at Gates Tennis
Center. The Huskies' third straight win leveled their season
records at 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the league.
"It was a good win today," said head coach Mike
Axford. "We came from behind in two of the doubles matches, and
rode the confidence into singles."
Tech trailed in all three doubles flights early before battling
back in all three. Luka
Stupar and Doug
Yossida won four straight games but couldn't get the final
break back to pull even in an 8-5 loss at No. 1.
The Huskies won the other two doubles matches by 8-4 scores. Andrew
Kremkow and Anders
Sandholm were down 4-1 in their No. 2 doubles match before
winning the final seven games. James
Konarske and Chris
Verhulst were the victorious duo at No. 3.
The hosts maintained momentum into singles, winning four matches
in straight sets and another in a third-set super tiebreaker.
Sandholm was the first off the courts with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at
No. 2. Yossida was next with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 3. Konarske
secured the team win with a 7-5, 6-1 score at No. 4.
Lake Superior State (2-16, 1-6 GLIAC) won its only singles match
at No. 5, where Ryne DuShane defeated Andrew
Kremkow 6-4, 6-4.
Stupar (4-6, 6-0, 10-1 at No. 1) and Verhulst (6-3, 6-1 at No.
6) were Tech's other winners.
Michigan Tech will play two more home matches this weekend. Ohio
Dominican comes to Gates Friday at 1 p.m. Lake Erie will visit
Saturday at 10 a.m.
