MIDLAND, Mich. - No. 21-ranked Northwood snapped Michigan Tech's
five-match winning streak in men's tennis today with an 8-1 score.
The match was the make-up of a Mar. 24 meeting that was postponed
because of weather/travel issues.
Tech turned in a solid showing in doubles, but could not take a
match from the Timberwolves. The Huskies' top pair of Luka
Stupar and Doug
Yossida lost by just a break, 8-6. NU won the other two doubles
flights by 8-3 scores.
James Konarkse was the only Husky to win his first set in
singles, but he couldn't hold on in a 4-6, 6-2, 10-2 decision at
No. 4.
Stupar lost his first set at No. 1, but prevailed in a third-set
super tiebreaker 1-6, 6-1, 11-9 to provide Tech its only team point
of the match.
"We started our singles slowly and that did not help," said head
coach Mike
Axford. "We all played better second sets, and it was nice to
see Luka pull his match out.
"We want to use this match to be ready to play tomorrow."
Michigan Tech will take a 9-8 overall record and 5-4 GLIAC slate
into the GLIAC Tournament which begins tomorrow in Midland. The
fifth-seeded Huskies will face No. 4-seeded Ferris State in their
opening round match at 7 p.m.
Northwood (12-4, 9-0 GLIAC) will be the top-seeded team in the
tournament. Wayne State (No. 2), Grand Valley State (No. 3), Lake
Superior State (No. 6), Findlay (No. 7) and Tiffin (No. 8) are the
other teams playing in the event.
