DETROIT - The Michigan Tech men's tennis team suffered its third
straight defeat to open GLIAC play as host Wayne State claimed a
5-4 decision today. The Warriors (8-3, 1-0 GLIAC) won two of three
doubles points, and the teams split the six singles matches to
account for the final score. The Huskies fell to 6-6 overall and
0-3 in league with the loss.
Tech's lone doubles point came at No. 2, where David Heuer and Anders
Sandholm were 8-6 winners. WSU triumphed at Nos. 1 and 3 by
scores of 8-1 and 8-3, respectively.
In singles, Tech was able to pull within 4-3 in team points.
Sandholm played an excellent match at No. 2 to gain a 6-2, 6-1
decision. Doug Yossida lost his first
set 7-5, but won the next two 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.
Wayne State won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and a three-set affair at
No. 3. The deciding point for the hosts came at No. 6 singles with
a 6-0, 6-0 score.
The Huskies' Chris Verhulst wrapped up
the day's play with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 5.
"It was a step in the right direction after a couple tough matches
last weekend," said head coach Mike Axford. "We need to
keep improving as we work toward the GLIAC Tournament."
Michigan Tech will conclude its weekend road trip at Northwood
tomorrow for a 10 a.m. match.
