GVSU Upends Tech 6-3 in Women's Tennis

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Michigan Tech fell to 1-2 in women's tennis today with a 6-3 setback at Grand Valley State. The Huskies picked up points at the top two singles positions and No. 2 doubles but were defeated in the remaining matches.

According to Tech head coach Mike Axford, the team got off to a slow start in doubles. "We played average as a team. If we had started well, it would have given us some momentum heading into singles."

Sophomore Victoria Zhilkina and junior Asel Otunchieva posted an 8-2 win in their No. 2 doubles match. GVSU won at both of the other doubles positions including a convincing 8-1 score at No. 1.

In singles, Zhilkina cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1. Sophomore Ploy Suthijindawong remained undefeated in GLIAC play with a 6-3, 6-3 score.

The host Lakers swept the bottom four flights in singles including No. 3, where junior Nathalia Rondelli battled back from a set down. She forced a third-set super tiebreaker before falling 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.

Michigan Tech will remain on the road for a 10 a.m. match at Ferris State tomorrow (Sept. 26).
