HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech fell to perennial Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference power Northwood by a 7-2 score
today at the Gates Tennis Center. The Huskies won at No. 2 doubles
and No. 2 singles, but lost the remaining flights in falling to 1-1
overall and 1-1 in league play.
The visitors opened the match by claiming 8-2 wins at Nos. 1 and 3
doubles. Tech's Asel Otunchieva and Victoria Zhilkina combined for
an 8-6 score at No. 2 to give the Huskies their first team
point.
In singles, sophomore transfer Ploy Suthijindawong secured Tech's
other team point with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph. Northwood swept all five
other flights in straight sets.
"The 7-2 score is disappointing," said head coach Mike Axford. "We
were in all the matches, but we just didn't execute. Northwood came
ready to play and took advantage of our mistakes."
Michigan Tech will take a week off dual match play to compete in
the ITA Regional in Indianapolis, Ind., next weekend (Sept.
18-20).
