HUSKIES DOWN CARDNALS 9-0 IN GLIAC WOMEN'S TENNIS OPENER

Michigan Tech opened up the GLIAC Women's Tennis season on a strong note, handily defeating the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals 9-0.

The Huskies opened up the doubles competition where Nathalia Rondelli and rookie netter Ploy Suthijindawong won a 9-7 decision in the No. 1 spot. The duo had to come back from a 7-4 defecit in order to take the victory. Asel Otunchieva and Victoria Zhilanka took the No. 2 game by a score of 8-4. In the No. 3 slot, Danielle Stoll and Caitlin Hartley were able to gain the sweep in the doubles with a 8-0 win.

"I thought that we played points really well today," said head coach Mike Axford. "We started out a little weak in the doubles, but really came back nicely to take that first match."

Tech's momentum carried over into the singles match, where they went 6-0. Freshman Kira Eck gained her first collegiate singles victory by taking a 6-4, 6-7 (3), 10-6 match against Saginaw's Lauren Smith. Other than Eck's three set decision, no other player surrendered a set to the Cardinals.

"This is the first match of the season, and we can just keep learning and getting better as the matches go on," stated Axford.

The Black and Gold will host the Northwood Timberwolves tomorrow (September 13th). The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
