HOUGHTON, Mich. The Michigan Tech men's tennis team
advanced its record to 2-0 by edging Lewis 5-4 today at the Gates
Tennis Center. The bottom of the Huskies' singles lineup came up
with three crucial team points including Chris Verhulst's deciding
match at No. 6.
Tech led 2-1 after doubles thanks to wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Brandon Ellefson and Anders Sandholm did not surrender a game in an
8-0 No. 2 doubles victory. Verhulst and Tim Viola combined for an
8-1 triumph at No. 3.
Lewis gained three-set wins at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles and a
default decision at No. 3 after Tech's Douglas Yossida suffered an
injury in warmups.
Ellefson and Viola both won in straight sets, making the team score
4-4 with No. 6 singles still on the court. Verhulst made quick work
of his opponent for a 6-2, 6-0 decision and team win.
"We did not play our best tennis tonight," said head coach Mike
Axford. "There were a lot of ugly points, but it is good to come
away with a win when we didn't play our best. This should give us
confidence that we can do even better tomorrow."
Michigan Tech will host its second straight match tomorrow
afternoon at 1 p.m. in a non-conference meeting vs. Lake Superior
State.
