MIDLAND, Mich. The Michigan Tech women's tennis team fell
to 1-1 on the season with a 7-2 loss at perennial power
Northwood.
For the second straight day, the number two doubles duo of Victoria
Zhilkina and Asel Otunchieva was successful. They defeated Darina
Berkova and Raphaela Perisic by an 8-5 count.
Tech fought hard in singles, especially at the top three flights.
Nathalia Rondelli was the team's lone singles winner by a 6-1, 4-6,
1-0 (10-8) margin at number three.
Zhilkina was defeated, 7-6, 6-2, at number one singles. She battled
through an injury sustained during the first set. Silvia Oliveros
was just a break away from both of her sets at number two singles,
7-5, 6-4.
"You always want to continue improving every match," said head
coach Mike Axford. "Northwood's always a tough opponent, and I'm
pleased how we played especially at the top of our
lineup.
"It was a promising first weekend, and we'll look to build on this
for the rest of the season."
Michigan Tech will make a return trip to Midland next weekend for
the ITA Great Lakes Regional. The regional will feature a 64-player
singles draw and a 32-team doubles draw.
