MEN'S TENNIS CLIPPED BY WAYNE STATE, 8-1

Ellefson and Parenteau Now 11-7 at Number Three Doubles

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Wayne State today in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at the Gates Tennis Center. The Huskies now own a 6-13 overall record and 1-3 slate in GLIAC play.

The match started in tight fashion as Tech and WSU traded doubles points at the number two and three flights. MTU's point came at number three, where Brandon Ellefson and Alan Parenteau teamed up for their 12th win of the 2006-07 campaign. They knocked off Ryan Buck and Kevin Turnbull, 8-6.

Tech's number one doubles duo of Brett Girard and Chris Calder played an excruciatingly close match. With the score 6-all in their pro-set, the Huskies had three break points before WSU's Antoine Marenaud finally held serve. The match eventually went to a tiebreaker before the Warriors pulled out the win, 9-8 (2).

Wayne State won all six singles matches despite solid showings from several Tech players.

Girard was within three points of forcing a third set against Marenaud in the number one singles match. The final score there was 6-3, 7-6 (4). Parenteau lost to Arthur Carrilho, 6-4, 6-3, at number four singles.

"Six or seven of these matches could have gone the other way," said head coach Mike Axford. "That makes the final score a little frustrating.

"We need to learn how to win close matches, and that will only come with more experience in those situations."

Michigan Tech, which has three regular season matches remaining -- all at home, will host Lake Superior State in a league match on Wednesday (Apr. 4) at 1 p.m. The Huskies defeated LSSU by a 5-4 score in a non-conference tilt earlier this season.
