Huskies Now 4-1 at Home
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech improved to 4-1 at home this
season with a 5-4 victory over Lake Superior State today at the
Gates Tennis Center. The Huskies picked up wins at number two and
three doubles and three through six singles.
Alan Parenteau and Brandon Ellefson cruised to an 8-3 pro-set
victory at number three doubles to start the match. Tech's number
one doubles lost before the number two duo of Rick Halverson and
Andy Sims won the final three games of their pro-set for an
important 8-5 victory.
In singles, the Huskies jumped ahead 4-1 with convincing decisions
from Ellefson at number three (6-0, 6-2) and Parenteau at number
four (6-2, 6-2).
Brett Girard hung tough with LSSU's Joe Goulet before surrendering,
6-4, 6-2, at number one. The Lakers also won at number two as Matt
Early defeated Halverson, 6-3, 6-1.
With the team score 4-3, Tech freshman Matt Tronnes came through
with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at number six singles for the decisive
fifth point.
At number five, Sims dropped his first set, 6-2, but rallied in the
second for a 6-4 victory. A super tiebreaker was played in lieu of
a third set since the team match was already decided. Sims fell
10-5 in the breaker.
"It's obviously great to get the win," said head coach Mike Axford.
"The number two doubles match proved to be crucial, and it was a
great team effort."
Michigan Tech (4-6 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) will next play during spring
break in Florida March 12-16.
