HOUGHTON, Mich. Michigan Tech gained an 8-1 victory over
Saginaw Valley State at the Gates Tennis Center today to wrap up
its 2007 fall regular season. The Huskies, who have won five of
their last six matches, are 7-4 overall and 5-4 in Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play heading into the GLIAC
Championships next weekend.
Tech swept doubles with none of the three flights' matches closer
than 8-3.
In singles, number one player Amy Palmgren and number three
Samantha Jang-Stewart both gained three-set victories. Palmgren's
was a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 triumph over Katie Hanover. Jang-Stewart
prevailed, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Straight set winners were Silvia Oliveros (number two singles),
Asel Otunchieva (number five), and Nathalia Rondelli (number six).
Saginaw Valley State's only point came by a 7-6 (3), 6-2 count at
number three singles where Cortney Heileman defeated Nicole
Kirch.
"We played solid tennis," said head coach Mike Axford. "It was a
great way to finish the fall regular season, and I think this will
give us confidence heading into the conference tournament."
Michigan Tech will face Mercyhurst in the opening round of the
GLIAC Championship Tournament Saturday (Oct. 27) in Midland,
Mich.
