TENNIS WRAPS UP FALL REGULAR SEASON WITH 8-1 WIN

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech gained an 8-1 victory over Saginaw Valley State at the Gates Tennis Center today to wrap up its 2007 fall regular season. The Huskies, who have won five of their last six matches, are 7-4 overall and 5-4 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play heading into the GLIAC Championships next weekend.

Tech swept doubles with none of the three flights' matches closer than 8-3.

In singles, number one player Amy Palmgren and number three Samantha Jang-Stewart both gained three-set victories. Palmgren's was a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 triumph over Katie Hanover. Jang-Stewart prevailed, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Straight set winners were Silvia Oliveros (number two singles), Asel Otunchieva (number five), and Nathalia Rondelli (number six). Saginaw Valley State's only point came by a 7-6 (3), 6-2 count at number three singles where Cortney Heileman defeated Nicole Kirch.

"We played solid tennis," said head coach Mike Axford. "It was a great way to finish the fall regular season, and I think this will give us confidence heading into the conference tournament."

Michigan Tech will face Mercyhurst in the opening round of the GLIAC Championship Tournament Saturday (Oct. 27) in Midland, Mich.
