Huskies fall in GLIAC opener at Kearly Stadium

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team fell 2-0 in its GLIAC opener against Saginaw Valley State on Friday night at Kearly Stadium. The Huskies dominated the first half but surrendered a pair of goals in the second half.
 
Reilly Lovercheck broke down her defender in the 25th minute and had a quality scoring chance saved. Ryley Winrich hit the crossbar minutes later while Kivrin Platt and Olivia Gette had first-half chances saved.
 
SVSU broke the stalemate at 49:31 when Grace Battershell scored after a nice passing play from Melanie Kolnitys and Emma Bradley.
 
Avalee Pomper added to the lead at 63:21 with the assist going to Abby Ellis.
 
Sophie Rater had a great individual effort to create a scoring chance with 5:00 left, but the shot sailed high.
 
SVSU led in shots 18-13 with a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Tech led in corner kicks 5-3 and committed only seven penalties to 14 by the Cardinals.
 
The Huskies wrap up the GLIAC opening weekend on Sunday, hosting No. 5 Grand Valley State at noon.
