HOUGHTON, Mich. – After earning a share of the GLIAC regular season championships over the weekend, the No. 15 nationally-ranked and No. 2-seeded Michigan Tech men's basketball team begins the GLIAC Tournament hosting No. 7 seed Davenport for the quarterfinals at the SDC Gymnasium on Wednesday, slated for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
The Game
Michigan Tech played to a 1-1 record against Davenport this season, with the home team prevailing in both regular-season matchups. The Huskies secured a 77-68 win at the SDC Gymnasium on Jan. 3, as the Panthers earned the series split with a 72-69 decision at Davenport on Jan. 29.

About the Panthers
Davenport concluded the regular season with a 14-14 overall record and an 8-12 ledger in the GLIAC. The Panthers are coming off a weekend split, falling to Grand Valley State 59-54 before downing Ferris State 79-64 on Senior Day Saturday.
Curtis Jackson highlighted the weekend for the Panthers with an average of 20.5 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and 2.5 steals. Jackson had a triple-double in the win versus Ferris State with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to send Davenport to the GLIAC Tournament.
The Panthers can be dangerous with fastbreak points (13.25), field goal percentage defense (40.6) and defensive rebounds per game (27.43), which rank second in the league.
Jackson is first in the league with 146 total assists for an average of 5.4 per game. On top of that, the Panthers have the GLIAC's leading scorer as Ken Walker averages 21.5 points per game, ranking 10th in the country.
Dylan Smith is the third Panther to reach double-figure scoring with 10.6 points and a team-best seven rebounds per game. Alden Ritt (6.0) and Jackson (5.5) also average over five boards per game.
About the Huskies
Michigan Tech secured the No. 2 seed in the GLIAC tournament and joined Northern Michigan, winning a share of the GLIAC regular season title with an overall record of 25-5 and a GLIAC-best 16-4 standing. The Huskies closed the season with a GLIAC weekend sweep with wins over Parkside (68-65) before throttling Roosevelt (99-72) on Senior Day Saturday.
Marcus Tomashek splashed in the game-winner on Thursday off a pass by Ty Fernholz before the underclassmen stole the show on Senior Day, as Fernholz knocked down a program-record 12 3-pointers and Matt Schmainda netted five 3-pointers as the bench scored 64 points and the team pulled down 54 boards and dished out 22 assists.
The Huskies hold the best field goal percentage defense in the league (39.8), while ranking 12th in the country. The Black & Gold also maintain the second-best scoring defense (65.5) and the second-best three-point percentage defense (28.0) in the GLIAC.
Tomashek, recently named to the Trevor Hudgins Top 15 Watch List, leads the team in scoring and ranks second in the league with 620 points and an average of 21.4 per game to go with four rebounds and 2.9 assists. Fernholz (9.7), Dawson Nordgaard (9.3) and Gabe Smith (8.1) all average over eight points per game, with Fernholz splashing in 2.73 3-pointers to rank second on the squad behind 3.24 triples by Tomashek.
Nate Abel and Smith are the team's top rebounders with 7.1 and 6.4 rebounds per game. Abel's 6.13 defensive rebounds per game ranks second in the GLIAC, while Smith ranks third in steals per game (1.87).
One Last Thing
Since the start of last season, the Huskies are 24-2 at the SDC Gymnasium. Michigan Tech is 11-1 at home this season, with its lone loss coming against Grand Valley State on Jan. 2.Â
