HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team held the No. 3 nationally-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers to one goal in the first half before ultimately dropping a 4-0 decision at Kearly Stadium on Sunday.
Grand Valley State (6-1-0, 3-0-0 GLIAC) totaled 34 shots with 13 shots on goal as Michigan Tech (1-6-1, 1-2-1 GLIAC) posted three shots with one on goal.Â
"We stuck with them at least for the first half and a good chunk in the second," Tech head coach Melissa Kuhar said. "They're a good team, and we gave up some silly goals in the second half. I think 1-0 at halftime is a positive and we'll have another shot at them."Â
Senior goalkeeper Ludesha Reynolds made the first start of the season, making nine saves while allowing four goals.
The Lakers fired seven shots before breaking through in the 22nd minute with Alli French earning the goal with an assist to Sonya Mehta, helping the opposition head into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
The Huskies' defense stood tall to end the first period and held the potent Lakers offense scoreless for the opening 20 minutes of the second half before Amanda Palmer found the back of the net in the 67th minute, with Sophia Morgan credited with the assist.
The Lakers' offense had two goals in the final three minutes of action, with scores from Mehta and Kacy Lauer to decide the contest at 4-0.Â
Olivia Gette logged the lone shot on goal for the Black & Gold.
Mehta had a team-leading seven shots with three on goal for the Lakers as goalkeeper Macie Hunter made one stop, facing three shots.
