NCAA D2 Midwest Region Tip-Off on tap for No. 13 Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. – After a week away from competition, the No. 13 nationally-ranked Michigan Tech men's basketball team is set for the NCAA D2 Midwest Region Tipoff hosted at the JustAGame Fieldhouse in the Wisconsin Dells.

Michigan Tech will face GLVC affiliates Missouri-St. Louis on Friday and Maryville on Saturday. Both games are slated for a 2:00 p.m. (EST) tipoff. A live stream ($) and live stats of the games can be found at Michigantechhuskies.com/live.

About the Tritons

Missouri-St. Louis travels to the D2 Midwest Region Tipoff following two losses at the D2CCA Tip-Off Classic. The Tritons fell short in their season-opener (82-79) to Northwest Missouri State on Nov. 1, before falling to Missouri Western State to conclude the tournament on Nov. 2.

UMSL returns three players from last season's squad that finished 21-12 and 15-5 in the GLVC, ending its season in the Sweet Sixteen. Queton Parker is the top-returner from 2024-25, averaging four points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game.

Despite two losses, Missouri-St. Louis shot 48.7 percent from the field and 41 percent from 3-point land, paired with 37.5 rebounds per outing. Sophomore Taye Moore (15ppg) and Meechy Phillips (11.5ppg) are the lone scorers in double-digits for the Tritons. Vincent Davis III is the anchor inside and leads the way with eight rebounds per game to go with five points and a steal. Freshman guard Miles Boland is averaging a team-high five assists and 2.5 steals a game.

The Tritons were tabbed to finish third in the GLVC Preseason Poll under long-time head coach Bob Sundvold in his 13th year at the helm of UMSL.

About the Saints

Maryville will open its season at the D2 Midwest Region Tip-Off. The Saints were selected to finish 14th in the GLVC Preseason Poll and are led by Preston Ingram in his second year at the helm.

Maryville faced CUSA affiliate Missouri State in an exhibition game on Halloween, falling 92-67. In the game, Maryville was held to 33.8 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from 3-point land and 7-for-12 from the charity stripe (56.3%). Despite the loss, the Saints held a 14-12 advantage in steals and a 15-19 advantage in turnovers.

Graduate student Evan Palmquist led the way with 19 points, five rebounds and three steals while Henry Sanchez Perez joined him in double-digit scoring with 13 points and three boards in 23 minutes off the bench.

About the Huskies

The No. 13 nationally-ranked Michigan Tech men's basketball squad comes into the weekend with a 2-0 record after navigating two overtime victories against two top-20 opponents in Lakeland, Florida, as part of the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame classic on Nov. 1 & 2.

The Huskies took down their second No. 3 nationally-ranked team in back-to-back seasons, dropping Dallas Baptist, a Final Four team a season ago, 75-70, before outlasting No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne to close the tournament.

Michigan Tech's All-American, Marcus Tomashek, averaged 29.5 points and 9.5 rebounds, both team-highs in the undefeated opening weekend of the 2025-26 campaign. Tomashek was named to the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic Tournament team for his performance over the two games.

Gabe Smith joins Tomashek in double-figure scoring with an average of 10 points and 7.5 boards as Nate Abel produced a team-leading six steals and Matt Schmainda crashed the boards for eight rebounds, six on the offensive side–five coming in the win over Lenoir-Rhyne.

The Huskies' defense was vital in the two nationally-ranked wins as the Black & Gold allowed just six 3-pointers per game, holding the opposition to 27.9 percent from deep. Michigan Tech also won the rebounding battle in both games, averaging 47.5 rebounds per outing with 51 boards in the season-opener.

One Last Thing

The Tritons and Saints are familiar foes to Michigan Tech, as the Huskies swept the two teams in the D2 Midwest Region Tip-Off a season ago.
