PREVIEW: Huskies play final three road matches this week

WEEKEND MATCHES
• Michigan Tech travels this week for the final three road matches of the regular season.
• Tech plays at Northern Michigan on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
• The Huskies travel to Parkside for a 7 p.m. Eastern match on Friday.
• The week wraps up at Roosevelt on Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern.
• Tech is 8-12 overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC.

TV6 & FOX-UP COVERAGE
• In a new "VB in 60" format, the Michigan Tech at Northern Michigan volleyball match airs on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. on FOX-UP.
• Mark Evans (play-by-play) and Dave Ellis (color analyst) will call the match.
• Match previews are currently available on the TV6+ Roku App.
 
SCOUTING NMU
• Northern Michigan is 9-12 overall and 6-3 in the GLIAC. The six conference wins are over Parkside, Roosevelt, Saginaw Valley State, Lake Superior State, Purdue Northwest, and Grand Valley State.
• Liesl Haugen is second in the GLIAC in digs per set (4.62). McKenzie Gruner is third in the GLIAC in hitting percentage (.320). Allie Barlow is fourth in the conference in assists per set (9.51).
• Head Coach Mike Lozier is in his ninth season in Marquette.
• The Wildcats were picked fourth in the GLIAC Preseason Poll after going 20-9 overall and 13-4 in the GLIAC in 2024.
 
SCOUTING PARKSIDE
• Parkside is 14-6 overall and 5-5 in the GLIAC. The two conference wins are over Roosevelt, Purdue Northwest, Davenport, Lake Superior State, and Saginaw Valley State.
• Natalie Harris leads the GLIAC in digs per set (5.39), and is second in service aces per set (0.44). Ava Irvin is third in the conference in kills per set (3.44).
• The Rangers were selected sixth in the GLIAC Preseason Poll just behind the Huskies after going 11-17 overall and 7-9 in the GLIAC in 2024.
 
SCOUTING ROOSEVELT
• Roosevelt is 2-20 overall and 1-9 in the GLIAC. The wins are over Kentucky Wesleyan and Saginaw Valley State.
Alessia Isgro leads the Lakers with 2.64 kills per set. Zoe Hutchinson sets the attack with 3.64 assists per set. Cydney Martinez averages 3.08 digs per set.
• It's the second season of NCAA Division II and GLIAC play for the Lakers.
• The Lakers were picked 11th in the GLIAC Preseason Poll after going 4-23 overall and 2-14 in the GLIAC in 2024.
 
ROOSEVELT CONNECTIONS
• Roosevelt head coach Nicasio Paquiz Jr. was an assistant coach for Michigan Tech during the 2012 season.
• Current Michigan Tech assistant coach Mallory Nickelson was a four-year starting libero and setter at Roosevelt. She was the team captain in 2020-21 and graduated with the second-most assists in school history. She was an all-conference selection in 2019 and set the single-match school record for assists with 68 in 2019.
 
FIRST MEETINGS
• NMU – Tech fell 3-2 in a non-conference matchup with the Wildcats on Oct. 9 at the SDC Gym. The Huskies forced a fifth set that NMU won 15-11. Rachel Zurek and Madelyn Torola each had 18 kills.
• Parkside – Tech won 3-1 in Houghton on Sep. 27 with three of the four sets being decided by two points, and the fourth was a three-point differential. Rachel Zurek (17) and Jacqueline Yancy (16) led the offense.
• Roosevelt – The Huskies swept the Lakers in the home-opener on Sept. 26, winning 25-10, 25-20, and 25-10. Jacqueline Yancy had 12 kills for the Black and Gold.
 
LAST WEEKEND
• The Huskies split their home weekend, falling 3-1 to Wayne State on Friday and taking down Grand Valley State 3-2 on Saturday.
• Rachel Zurek led the offense with 2.89 kills per set, Madelynn Kreider set the attack with 9.56 assists per set, and Julia Fledderjohn led the defense with 4.44 digs per set.
 
GLIAC STATISTICAL RANKING
• Paige Wagner is third in blocks per set (1.00).
• Paige Wagner is fifth in hitting percentage (.360).
• Julia Fledderjohn is fifth in digs per set (4.14).
• Jacqueline Yancy is eighth in kills per set (3.12).
• Brooke Dzwik is eighth in aces per set (0.37).
• Tess Hayes is eighth in assists per set (8.15).
• Madelynn Kreider is ninth in assists per set (7.04).
• Tricia Kennedy is ninth in hitting percentage (.282).
 
GLIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

UP NORTH ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
• Tricia Kennedy was named to the Up North All-Tournament Team after she averaged 1.57 kills per set and 1.14 blocks per set in the four matches while hitting .333.
• In the 3-0 sweep of Adelphi on Saturday, Kennedy tallied 11 kills and six blocks (three solo blocks and three block assists) while hitting .550. In the tournament opener at Minnesota Duluth, the junior middle blocker had seven kills and seven blocks. She added three kills on four attempts against No. 17 Barry.
 
McKENDREE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
• Brooke Dzwik led the Huskies with 32 kills in the three sets, averaging 3.2 per set. Also led the Black and Gold with seven aces, and 54 receptions while ranking second with 28 digs, averaging 2.8 per set.
• Rachel Zurek led the Huskies with 11 blocks on the weekend and put down 27 kills, averaging 3 per set. She had over eight kills in all three matches.

COACH PINDRAL
• Cindy Pindral was named the eighth Head Coach of the Michigan Tech volleyball program on December 2, 2024.
• Pindral returned to the Huskies after being an Assistant Head Coach, Assistant Coach, and Volunteer Coach with the Huskies for seven seasons from 2016 to 2022.
• During her seven years with the Huskies, the team held a 139-62 overall record. Tech went to four straight NCAA Tournaments from 2017-21 and won a pair of regular-season GLIAC championships in the spring of 2021 and then repeated in the fall of 2021.
• As a freshman student-athlete at the University of Florida, Pindral was the starting setter for the Gators who went to the NCAA Sweet 16, won an SEC Championship, and were ranked as high as No. 10.
• She finished her collegiate career as a three-time starter at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. She was an Academic All-American and All-RMAC selection.

• Tech finished the 2024 season with a 17-12 overall record.
• The Huskies advanced to the GLIAC semifinal for the eighth consecutive time last season, with a 10-7 GLIAC record and a fifth-place finish in the conference.
