HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's basketball team takes to the road this weekend to continue GLIAC play, facing Grand Valley State on Thursday at 8 p.m. and Davenport on Saturday at 3 p.m.Â

About the Lakers
Grand Valley State returns to action following a 6-4 record through 10 games, receiving votes in the latest NABC National Poll, although the Lakers succumbed to a double-overtime loss at Indianapolis (88-86) on Dec. 16 and an overtime loss (94-91) against Illinois-Springfield on Dec. 20. Despite dropping the final two non-conference contests of the year, the Lakers are 2-0 in the opening week of GLIAC Play.
Grand Valley State produces 80 points per game, with 34 points coming from the Lakers reserves. Sophomore guard Kaden Brown paces the offense with 13.3 points per game and a notable 32-point outing in the loss to UIndy. Senior forward William Dunn (13.1), Jalen Charity (11.4) and Ethan Alderink (10.8) join Brown in double-digit scoring, proving to be one of the deeper teams in the league.
As a team, the Lakers grab 40 boards per outing, which ranks third in the GLIAC, with Dunn providing a team-high 5.2 rebounds. Brown has the green light for GVSU, pouring in 2.8 3-pointers per game on 42.4 from beyond the arc. Junior guard Mason Docks is the team's top facilitator with 4.9 assists per game, which ranks first in the GLIAC, adding 9.6 points and 4.8 boards.
Cornell Mann returns for his third season leading the Lakers, who were predicted to finish fourth in the GLIAC.
About the Panthers
Davenport has played to a 4-6 overall record while going 0-2 in the opening weekend of conference play. The Panthers have won their last two games with wins over Great Lakes Christian (96-61) on Dec. 14 and Tiffin (62-61) on Dec. 21.
Senior guard Jovan Tucker paces the offense for the Panthers with 18 points per outing while scoring 20 or more points in five games. First-year guard Joey Cabana joins Tucker in double-digit scoring with 10 points per game.Â
Freshman forward Matyas Vrabel has accrued two double-doubles this season, averaging 9.7 points and 7.1 rebounds a game.
The Panthers are holding the opponents to 68.4 points per game with the opposition shooting 41 percent from the field and 30.3 percent from long range—both rank second in the league.
Burt Paddock returns for his 17th season at the helm of the Panthers, who were tabbed to finish 10th in the GLIAC.
About the Huskies
The Huskies most recently won its fifth straight, besting Northland 106-43 for the 1050th win in program history to see the Huskies start the year 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC. Michigan Tech also enjoyed an exhibition win at Green Bay on Dec. 18 (72-7) in front of 5,207 fans at the Resch Center, battling back from a 13-point second-half deficit.Â
The GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year, Marcus Tomashek, was tabbed GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, following his efforts in the win against his hometown school, where he scored 30 points for the ninth time in his career also having a team-high eight rebounds.
The honor was the second for Tomashek and the fourth total Player of the Week honor for the Huskies.
Michigan Tech is one of the top-shooting teams in the country, shooting 51.9 percent from the field and 39.8 from 3-point land while posting 81.5 points a game. Over the last four games, the Black & Gold are shooting 57.4 percent from the field and 47.9 percent from 3-point land while outscoring the opposition by 35 points.Â
Tomashek continues to be a lethal scorer, producing a team-leading 24.1 points while adding 3.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 29 minutes per game. Redshirt junior Dawson Nordgaard has scored in double-figures in nine games for an average of 11.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 21.2 minutes. Senior Pete Calcaterra (10.6) and first-year guard Ty Fernholz (10.8) join Tomashek and Nordgaard as double-digit scorers.
The Huskies have also found success off the bench, with nearly 35 points per game coming from Michigan Tech's reserves.
One Last Thing
Fernholz continues to be one of the top 3-point shooters in the country, with his 47.8 percent from long-range ranking first in the GLIAC and 12th in the land. The Stoughton, Wisconsin, native averages 2.75 3-point makes per game with 22 through the first 10 games of the season.Â
