HOUGHTON, Mich. — The Michigan Tech women's tennis team was three points from victory against GLIAC foe Ferris State today but the visiting Bulldogs won the final match on the courts and the team match 5-4.
Tech's Chelsea Uganski won the first set of her match with Julie Fusik by a 6-3 score and was up 4-1 in a second set tiebreaker. Fusik was able to win the next six points to claim the tiebreaker 7-4 and eventually won the third set 6-3.
"We played hard today, but just didn't match up well," said head coach Kevin Kalinec. "I'm proud of Chelsea. She played pretty well under a lot of pressure."
The Huskies (6-4 overall, 3-4 GLIAC) were up 2-1 after doubles thanks to wins at Nos. 1 and 2 by scores of 8-1 and 8-4, respectively. Ferris claimed the No. 3 doubles match 8-4.
Natalia Lebedeva and Kwang Suthijindawong continued their dominance at the top two singles flights. Lebedeva was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 1 to improve to 9-1 at the position. Suthijindawong remained perfect on the year in singles at 10-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 2.
Flights 3-5 were all decided in straight sets in the Bulldogs' favor to tie the team score 4-all before the three-set deciding match at No. 6.
Michigan Tech will be back in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. vs. Grand Valley State.
