Defense Shines in Women's Basketball Win

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech women's basketball teams strong defense was on display Saturday (Feb. 11) at the SDC Gymnasium as the Huskies defeated Lake Superior State 72-43 in GLIAC action. The Huskies lead the league in scoring defense allowing 57.0 points per game and improve to 16-5 overall and 11-4 in the league.

"Today was our best team win of the year," said head coach Kim Cameron. "Our starters set the tone and everyone kept it up."

Tech opened the game on a 17-0 run and held Lake Superior State scoreless until junior Maria Blazejewski made a free throw at the 9:43 mark. Blazejewski, who is tied for seventh in the league in scoring (15.5 ppg), scored the first 12 points in the game for LSSU and 12 of the team's 17 points in the first half. She would scored just two points in the second half due to foul trouble.

Tech shot 42-percent (13-31) in the first half and enjoyed a 36-17 lead at halftime. LSSU shot just 25-percent (6-24) in the first half and missed all six 3-point attempts.

Tech out-scored Lake Superior, 36-26, over the final 20 minutes for the win.

Senior Lynn Giesler led Tech with 14 points. Fellow senior Krista Kasuboski shot 5-of-10 from the field and 2-4 from behind the arc to finish with 12 points.

Overall 14 players saw playing time for the Huskies.

The Huskies scored 18 points off of 19 turnovers by the Lakers.

Tech will play at league leader Ashland (Feb. 16).
