No. 19 Tech Women Sail Past Lake Superior State

Box Score

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. - The No. 21 Michigan Tech women's basketball team scored a season-high 83 points in an 83-53 win at Lake Superior State in GLIAC play Thursday (Jan. 12). The 30-point win was the largest for the Huskies, who improve to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the league, since a 75-43 win at Findlay on Feb. 3, 2011.

Junior Sam Hoyt scored a career-high 29 points for the Huskies. The Arkansaw, Wis., native shot the ball extremely well in the contest, finishing 11-of-16 from the field and 7-of-10 from behind the arc. She also tallied four assists, five steals and one block.

"I am so happy for Sam," said head coach Kim Cameron. "Tonight was her break out game, and she took on more of a role with Emma Veach out."

The Huskies opened the game with a pair of 3-pointers and never trailed in the contest. The Tech lead would grow to as many as 13 points in the first half before entering the break leading 30-20.

The Huskies out-scored the Lakers 53-33 over the final 20 minutes for the 83-53 win.

The Lakers who entered the contest leading the league in 3-point defense could not stop the Huskies from deep as the Huskies finished 15-of-25 (60-percent) from behind the arc.

"We made our first 3-pointer and it gets contagious. The team was feeling it from deep so they kept shooting it," said Cameron about the team's ability to shoot the three.

Tech had 13 players play in the contest. Senior Lindsey Lindstrom was the only other Tech player in double figures with 16. Freshman Jillian Ritchie finished with five points, five rebounds and six assists in her first career start for the Huskies.

Senior Sarah Cubr led the Lakers with 14 points, and junior Maria Blazejewski finished with 11.

LSSU out-rebounded Tech 34-30. Tonight was the first time this season that Tech has won after being out-rebounded.

Tech will play at Saginaw Valley State Saturday (Jan. 14).
