RENSSALAER, Ind. - The Michigan Tech volleyball team scored its
first win of the season after defeating Franklin Pierce, 3-2,
Friday (Sept. 2) at the Saint Joseph Tournament.
Michigan Tech dropped the first two sets of the match (21-25,
23-25) despite finishing with a better attack percentage in each
match. The Huskies hit .154 to the Raven's .143 in the first match.
The Huskies also dominated the second match hitting .306 to
.162.
Tech's strong hitting continued throughout the match. The Huskies
hit .261 to win set three, 25-19, and hit a match-high .414 to
claim set four, 25-13. Tech won the decisive fifth set, 15-10, to
take the 3-2 win.
"The team worked really hard and did not give up," said head coach
Orlando Gonzalez, after leading the team to its first
win under Gonzalez after trailing 2-0. "Once the team found its
groove it was really exciting volleyball to watch."
Freshman Andria Nyenhuis recorded a match-high 14 kills and
finished with a .333 attack percentage. The Gladstone, Mich.,
native added five blocks on defense (three solo, two assists).
Sophomores Abby DeWitt and Jordanna Kero also factored into the attack with both
hitting .429. DeWitt added seven kills and Kero finished with a
team-high 10 digs.
Junior Skylar Paffenroth finished with 12 assists over the
final three sets and senior Kenzie Tonn recorded seven digs at the libero
position in the last three sets.
Tech will close out the Saint Joseph's Tournament with matches
against Notre Dame College and Cedarville University Saturday
(Sept. 3).
