Football Wins Big at Ohio Dominican 35-13

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Michigan Tech turned in a dominating performance with a 35-13 victory at Ohio Dominican today in GLIAC football. The No. 21-ranked Huskies outgained the Panthers 443-to-276 in total offensive yards in moving to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.

"It was a hard-fought game, and I thought we came ready today," said head coach Tom Kearly.

Quarterback Tyler Scarlett and tailback Akeem Cason led the way for the Huskies' offense. Scarlett completed 14-of-20 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Cason added 116 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Tech's defense came to play as well. The Black and Gold created two turnovers while limiting the hosts under 100 yards below their season average of 383.

Defenses ruled the first quarter. The only points of the frame came from a 35-yard interception return by Tech's Jesse Vandenberg. The play marked the first defensive touchdown for the Huskies since Robert Haynes' 80-yard interception at Northern Michigan in 2008.

The Michigan Tech offense then scored on three of its next four drives. Cole Welch's one-yard run at the 13:29 mark of the second quarter made it 14-0.

A 43-yard throw-back screen from Scarlett to tight end Bryan LaChapelle broke the game open with 8:29 left in the first half, making the score 21-0.

Quinn Parnell then picked off his second pass of the year, hauling in a highly tipped ball to set up another touchdown. Ethan Shaver capped a 73-yard drive by taking a direct snap from center and scoring from one yard out with 2:16 showing in the second quarter.

Ohio Dominican showed some life in the third quarter, taking the opening kickoff to the 48-yard line and driving the remaining 52 to close within 28-7.

Tech answered right back with a 71-yard drive. Scarlett found LaChapelle for the second time in the game to make it 35-7.

The Huskies' defense held the Panthers off the board again until 10 minutes to play, when Mike Noffsinger got loose on a 26-yard scoring run. The extra point was blocked, leaving the score 35-13. There would be no more scoring.

Noffsinger, who entered with a 127 yards-per-game average, was held to 64 yards on nine carries. Tech's defense also pressured ODU quarterback Jeremy Fudge all day. He completed just 14-of-31 attempts and was picked off twice.

"We really pressured their quarterback well today," said Kearly. "We didn't sack him often, but we made him uncomfortable and that was a key for us."

Vandenberg had a team-high 10 tackles to go with his pick-six. Three other Huskies had six tackles apiece including Justin Armstrong, who tallied a sack for the second straight week.

LaChapelle was named Superior Player of the Game for his four catch, 79-yard day that included two touchdowns.

Michigan Tech will play its next two games at home beginning next Saturday (Oct. 8). The Huskies will entertain Saginaw Valley State for its annual Homecoming game at Sherman Field at 1 p.m.
