HOUGHTON, Mich. - Sophomore Ann Roman and freshman Melanie
Hoffman each scored their second goals of the year to lead Michigan
Tech to a 2-1 win over Northwood for its first ever Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference soccer victory Saturday (Sept.
25).
"Really excited to get our first GLIAC win," said head coach
Michelle Jacob. "The girls came back with great intensity after
allowing the first goal to score two goals of our own."
Northwood scored the games first goal three minutes into the match.
Junior Amanda Watson scored her league-leading seventh goal of the
season with a shot following a cross by Toyna Sitney.
Roman would tie the game with her goal with just over 10 minutes
remaining in the first half. The Timberwolves goalie Julia Monger
could not handle a high ball sent into the box by the Huskies.
Roman was able to collect the loose ball and fire in a shot from
near the end line.
Hoffman would score the game-winning goal for the Huskies with a
shot from the corner of the penalty box 77 minutes into the
match.
"In the second half our center backs made a strong effort to shut
down Amanda Watson. Our midfielders really put pressure on their
midfielders to force turnovers which gave us opportunities."
Michigan Tech (3-4-0, 1-4-0 GLIAC) out shot Northwood (3-5-0, 1-5-0
GLIAC) 12-9 in the match.
Freshman MaryBeth Spoehr made four saves in the win for the
Huskies.
Tech will continue GLIAC play Sunday (Sept. 26) when it hosts
Saginaw Valley State. Kick-off is set for noon.
