HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech battled back from an 11-point
second half deficit to within a point in the final minute before
falling 70-64 to Saginaw Valley State in men's basketball today.
The Huskies wrapped up their season with a 9-18 overall record and
8-14 GLIAC slate.
Senior Georgio Holt thrilled the
home crowd with an alley-oop dunk on Tech's first offensive
possession. He ended with eight points in a half where the lead
changed hands nine times. The score at intermission was 34-31.
Tech had the game knotted at 36-all within the first minute of the
second half. Saginaw then went on a 14-3 run to grab a 50-39
advantage with 11:27 showing. Matt Esters' three-point
play cut the gap back to single digits. The Huskies switched to
zone on defense and continued to chip away at the lead down the
stretch.
Brian Olley's jumper with
5:14 to go made it a 59-57 score in favor of the visitors.
The Cardinals hit a big 3-pointer to stop Tech's 8-0 run with 4:52
to play, but Hojnacki's turn-around jumper cut it to 62-59.
After a SVSU miss, Gaedke dribbled the length of the floor for a
layup. Saginaw missed again, but got an easy putback from Keithan
Jackson to go back up three with 2:43 to play. Both teams had empty
trips before another Hojnacki bucket again trimmed the margin to a
point, 64-63.
Tech nearly had a steal at the one-minute mark, but a loose ball
was picked up by SVSU which called timeout with seven seconds left
on the shot clock. Jackson came through again, making a 3-pointer
to extend the gap to four with :51 showing. After a turnover, the
Huskies were forced to foul four straight times to put the
Cardinals at the line for the 1-and-1. They made both and held Tech
to a T.J. Brown free throw for
the rest of the game.
"It could've gotten ugly, but we battled back," said head coach Kevin
Luke. "Our zone slowed them down, but Jackson's two late
buckets were probably the game in a nutshell.
"We wanted to end with a win for our seniors. We will miss them as
people and for all the hard work they put into the program."
The seniors, Holt and Chris Baugh, both started
the game. Holt finished with eight points and three rebounds. Baugh
played seven minutes and had a rebound.
Hojnacki was the game's top offensive player with 25 points on
10-of-17 shooting. The 6-7 forward added 10 rebounds for his second
straight double-double and fifth of the season. No other Tech
player was in double figures. Don Fowler and Gaedke had
identical marks of eight points, six assists and four rebounds.
