KENOSHA, Wis. - Michigan Tech outscored UW-Parkside
49-to-23 in the second half to claim a 71-62 non-conference men's
basketball victory. Post players Mike
Hojnacki and Ali
Haidar combined for 42 points in the game (34 in the second
half) to help the Huskies improve to 5-1.
"The guys had to make a decision to play hard, and
they did," said head coach Kevin
Luke. "We set some goals to cut their lead in the second half
by playing within our systems, and we were able to do that."
The Rangers (1-3) dominated first-half play by
shooting 55 percent and forcing nine Tech turnovers. The hosts made
two 3-pointers in the final minute of the half to take a 39-22
advantage into halftime.
Coach Luke's game-plan tweaks at the intermission
worked. Tech came out of the locker room and outscored UWP 11-to-2
in the first five minutes of the second half. Hojnacki's put-back
with nine minutes left gave the Huskies their first lead since the
17:00 mark of the opening stanza.
Haidar added a layup on the next possession, and the
Black and Gold never trailed again. Hojnacki buried back-to-back
3-pointers with five minutes to play to push the margin to six. Nate
Kindt added a layup off a sweet pass from Alex
Culy for a 60-52 score with 4:03 to go.
Hojnacki put an exclamation point on the second half
comeback with a slam dunk at the 1:45 mark. Tech made 7-of-10 free
throws in the final 90 seconds for the win.
The dynamic "H" duo of Hojnacki and Haidar combined
to go 17-of-23 from the field. Hojnacki finished with a team-high
seven rebounds.
Austin
Armga posted 10 points while fellow freshman Culy added nine
points and a game-high seven assists.
UWP made just seven field goals in the second half
and shot 32 percent. Meanwhile, Tech singed the nets at 64
percent.
After six games in the last 13 days, Michigan Tech
will now have five days off. The Huskies will travel to play arch
rival Northern Michigan Saturday (Dec. 4) in both teams' Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.
